Project Description
Bridge Inspection and Repairs
RKF Engineering Services was engaged to conduct concrete condition surveys on several bridges and develop repair designs for the damage identified. Special consideration was needed during the design to account for a lack of design drawings for the aging bridges and for working in remote sites.
As part of the survey, detailed measurements and ground penetrating radar (GPR) scanning were utilised to understand the details of the concrete elements. The survey also identified several instances of concrete damage to piers and abutments and testing showed the damage was likely due to chloride ion induced corrosion of the reinforcement.
Designs were developed from the survey information and a major part of the design was to provide temporary propping for the bridges so they could remain in service during the repairs. Propping was provided using a combination of proprietary props and fabricated steel to suit each bridge.
